Confronting the contradictions:
Professional ideals and realities for contingent faculty in LIS
Who? Jennifer Sweeney (Drexel University) & Carla Stoffle (University of Arizona)
Where? Berkeley room @ the Boston Park Plaza Hotel, 50 Park Plaza, Boston, MA 02116
When? 08/Jan./2016, 8:30 - 10:00 am
This session seeks to continue the conversation about the use of adjuncts in LIS education. The Part-time and Adjunct SIG presentation at ALISE 2015 provided some of the first real survey data from LIS adjuncts, as well as reports on LIS programs that are changing the adjunct environment with fresh management approaches. We were left with many more questions, a hallmark of a good program.
We return this year to address some of these questions. Our session this year will thus focus on a select few key issues of definition, to serve as a springboard for future dialogue:
1) Who are adjuncts, and how do we define them?
2) What are their compensation ranges and working conditions?
3) What impact does the institutional context of policies and guidelines have on the use of adjuncts at the program level? and
4) What are the implications of the growth of online learning, unbundling of teaching tasks, and shifting priorities in research and instruction? Presenters on this panel discuss these trends incorporating results of the 2014 Survey of Contingent Faculty in LIS and fall 2015 interviews with deans and directors of LIS programs.
